Hi,

I'm new to the world of fea for composite structures. The problems I will be dealing with are going to involve large strain and will require the use of an explicit code. So I was curious to know if anyone has any experience with explicit codes for composite analysis. Any recommendations, tips, links to resources would help. Which solver would be the best suited and utilizes the most effective failure criteria(s)?

The ones that I have come across so fare are NEi Nastran explicit, ANSYS Explicit, Abaqus explicit and LS-Dyna.

What sort of explicit analysis will you be running ? Crash ? Drop tests ? Impact analysis ?
Almost all of those solvers can handle composites and also failure criteria.

LSDyna allow user defined material models as well. Although I believe other solvers might as well.

The analysis that I will be dealing with will be similar to deep drawing. The time scales will not be as small as drop or crash tests but the model will have very high strain rates. Thus the need for an explicit code that has accurate failure criteria(s) for composites.

I haven't personally used LS-Dyna but have heard good things about it but I'm just not sure if it is suited for composite materials. Which is why I wanted to post this here to see if any members have experience using explicit codes with composite materials and get some insight.

LS Dyna is well suited for that. You can input your stress strain curves for different strain rates so you get a very accurate result. It has several models for composites. Check out their materials manual to see if they have the model you need for your composites.

It also has implicit-explicit switching if required. It is extensively used in metal forging, also in deep drawing simulations.
