Exploding block 2

When I explode a block via the modify-explode command and try to select individual objects the whole block disappears and is removed ?
I am using AutoCad R14.
Can anyone explain what is happening ?

make sure block creation layer is not frozen.

Win 2000 Pro
Autocad 14, 2002 with EP 2.3.1

Make certain all layers are on.
The block could be on a special
layer.
