Hi All,

I would like to ask information about explosive cladding.

Could someone please advise me if a vendor is going to use explosive cladded plates, what important information they have to provide in order for use to allow.

Also, is there any ASTM standards that we can request the vendor to follow in order to ensure sound materials are use.

Regards,
Darren

darrenyee88, you should inform your vendor what Code of construction must be met. Your vendor, in turn, should state that the backer material meets one of the material specifications for that Code, and that the cladding material also meet one of those specifications, or in some cases an equivalent ASTM spec.

The vendor should state what testing is applied. The vendor should also state that the clad item meets a specification such as SA-263, SA-264, or SA-265 as applicable.

See also Sec VIII, Div 1, Part UCL.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

There is no spec for the clad itself, but as stated the base material must meet the code requirements.
Are you taking credit for the clad as part of the thickness for pressure rating?
They should be able to report the thickness of base and of the clad, the composition of both, the strength of both (independently) and some test of bond strength.

To restate, the clad itself must meet one of the sheet material specifications as mentioned by SnTMan. The process of cladding and qualification is handled by the vendor and should be reviewed by the Purchaser. Look at the explosive cladding procedure how it was qualified.

In addition to above, the vendor should be able to provide their weld procedures and methodology. Not sure what cladding you have, but usually welding of joints is done with batten strips of the same material (i.e. titanium, zirconium, tantalum), after welding of the carbon steel plate is completed.
