Exporting SW files

Hi all!
Is it possible to export from SW files to others (CATIA, Unigraphics, Pro/ENGINEER etc.) not only geometry but features also?
Any additional programms?

I tried Transmagic. It works fine for the standard formats like ACIS, PARASOLID etc. with the ability to repair the geometry. For the features of the construction try 3D_Evolution. They say, that they are able to transform the feaures but I did not try it.

Be careful in believing the software-sellers. Sometimes 3D-models change only to modern-art shapes and not to the expected working-file You need.

A huge problem with trying to export features is that systems (those that actually have features) have different types of features that not all of them share. How do you interpret these? They can't just stop enhancing their software because the other guys are not doing the same thing. And you can't restrict the types of features you use to a lowest common denominator.

Does this remind you of the bad old days of IGES........?

So I would say it ain't going to happen.

Also remember, for example, Parasolid does not have features - so how would you tranfer them through Parasolid, etc?

You would pretty much need custom point to point converters. Then the next problem would be they would hardly ever be up to date due to the out-of sync revisions of the source and target systems. Then you can't load your nice new revision of your CAD system until everyone is up to the same level - by which time you are a year behind.... Also they would be expensiiiiive - much development work - small market.

It ain't pretty and it ain't encouraging but unfortunately it's life.....

Yes IGES & Parasolid doesn't have features (imported surfaces or curves only).
But is it possible to create a part or assy in SW, than translate it so that customer can edit it in CATIA or UG?

A Parasolid export is a solid, not just surfaces.

Parasolid does support features in its native mode, just no CAD vendor, even UG who own Parasolid, have implemented Parsolid as a feature modeler. They only use Parasolid to create the basic shape and then do boolean operations to get what you see.

Looslib: Your second point may be technically true, however it serves well to emphasize my comment that it can't be implemented in practice for transfers of data. (Which I agree is a shame, but there you go - real life bites as in the butt yet again....)

Ref. your first comment, could I gently point out that Pachem was probably merely lumping "...surfaces or curves..." together for brevity. However it is indeed possible to export surface bodies in Parasolid if that's what you start with. Not being critical - just something to be aware of on odd occassions - plenty of scars on my rear end!

Actually, before 'uman beans started messing with the forests, wild fires were usually a good thing. Not that I'm a raving tree-hugger (or proe-hugger!).............
