Say you have a community gym that was built in the 80's. It has a 100 unit parking lot that includes a few handicap stalls and a concrete walkway connecting the parking lot to the front door of the building.
My question is, what code/standard typically governs the minimum required lighting (if any) of the sidewalk and parking lot.
I am asking because for new construction, the IBC defines the "means of egress" as extending the "public way" which implies the property line....and then per 1006.2 says minimum illumination is 1 footcandle. Are they really intending an owner to light the sidewalk and parking lot all the way to the property line?
And then, how might this apply to older properties?
Just looking to widdle down my research, any help to point me in the right direction is appreciated!
