'External Corrosion of Oil and Natural Gas Pipelines,' a free preview chapter from ASM Handbook, Volume 13C, Corrosion: Environments and Industries:

Of special interest, note the 'Intelligent pig' (Magnetic flux leakage detector) for detecting thin spots in the pipeline wall, Figure 14. The tail end sensors determine whether internal or external thinning.
Don't know if this type was used by BP, but looks to me like the pipeline must be pretty well cleaned before use.

Note: also available are the preview chapters on the corrosion of Magnesium and of Hafnium, from ASM Handbook, Volumes 13A and 13B, respectively

That's an interesting chapter. I was struck that it included no mention of CRA materials which are sold in the hundreds of thousands of tons per year in both martensitics and duplex for line pipe as well as downhole and risers.

'Corrosion in the Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry' is covered on pages 922-1053 of which the sample chapter is only 12 pages. Materials selection is covered in the longer production & refining sections, so corrosion resistant alloy info should be there.

Do companies (that issue quarterly & annual P&L statements) actually spend money for duplex stainless on ordinary pipelines?

Kenvlach, Duplex is pretty common in downhole completion equipment as is Martensitic Stainless.

I can't say about the piplines however.
