A 20" live pipe is having an external corrosion / corrosion products build-up, flaking... what would you suggest to inspect the potential pitting under the deposit (how deep the corrosion might have gone under the deposit)?

Thank you

A long screwdriver....

The corrosion products have very little strength so just scrape them off then do some UT.

Or just fit a bolted clamp over ituntil you can depressurise the line and examine a bit better or replace the section.

No pictures, size, walk thickness, pressure, so you're not going to get much more....

This is not good advice. Do not do this unless the system is very low pressure and the process contained is not dangerous. Believe it or not, a little bit of scale can block a through-wall leak even with high pressure.

Simply perform Long Range Ultrasonic Testing or Pulse Eddy Current Inspection if the system is online.

Hence why you use the long screwdiver.....

If its that bad at least you're there when it fails rather than the night shift.
