Extrude on a cylindrical surface

Hey, I'm having some issues with some geometry I'm trying to make in Creo Parametric 2.0 and was wondering if some one could help me.

I have cylinder, and on this cylinder I want to cut out a shape around the cylinder. So it's kinda like I want to extrude in curved plane around the cylinder if you get what i mean? My question is, is this possible and how?

So far i've sketched with spline tool on regular plane and the used pattern tool, the problem is that I don't get the smooth transitions between the patterned features and I get edges on the shape.

Help would be appreciated.

Are you curring a groove type feature that wraps around the cylinder? If it has a constand cross-section, use the sweep feature.
Draw your path on the cylinder, then the cross section at one end.

I would create a plane through the cylinder, perpendicular to the axis, and create the extrude on that as an alternative to a sweep.

If it's a round cut (and not a helical cut), could you use a Revolve instead of Extrude? You can set the Revolve to cut material instead of add material, and you can set the angle of the cut (it doesn't have to be 360 degrees).
