Extruding and surface meshing question.

I have extruded a flat plane into the side of a cylinder in Hypermesh and I would like to join the two together as one meshed object. I can think of two ways to do this.

One option is to leave the object as is and mesh it in such a way that the meshing is on the outer surface of the object and does not mesh the portion of the flat plane in the cylinder. How would I do that?

The other option is to delete the potion of the flat plane that is inside the cylinder so that the edge of the plane becomes the circumference of the cylinder. How do I do this? I have played round with the extrude commands and I can’t get this to work.

I would appreciate if some one could help me with one or the other. Thanks.

Surface mesh, ,both the plane and the cylinder are thin walled.

Trim the plane at the cylinder wall, delete the volume of the cylinder, and you'll be ready for your next hurdle. Do the surface meshing tutorial when you get sick of creating meshes that don't line up!
