Is it better to use a eye bolt or a lifting lug? I have a 30 mm thick plate(ss)thats going to be bolted(6 bolts- 16mm) on a 1000 lb pump. Can I use either a eye bolt on this plate or weld a lifting lug on the middle of plate to lift this pump? If I use a lifting lug, whats the minimum thickness of the weld around the base of the lifting lug? Is there a load chart for lifting lugs like the one for eye bolt? Are the 16 mm bolts being used to mount this plate on the pump going to be ok under the 1000 lbs of tension load ?

Go to They have both eyes and lugs. Typically eyes can be threaded and attached by aa nut or tapped hole. Lugs are generally welded. Eyes are not as effective as lugs in non vertical line pull. Look at the data sheets and see which works best for your application. They also have support you can get additional information. If you do go with eye bolts, get shouldered eye bolts fo added stability.
