In testing a welder with a wpq, can the welder use a different F number filler metal as long as the F number filler metal was in the same group of F numbers? Ie. 70s-2 substituted for ER 309.
Thanks
Dave

A bit confusing to follow our question.....
Welder testing can use a different filler metal as long as it is the same F number. ER70S-2 and ER309 are both F6, so that is allowed.
You can change the basemetal used for welder qualification from that listed in the WPS as well, per QW-423.1

Strange thing about Sec. IX is that you can qualify for stainless without ever welding stainless....a welder qualified on Carbon Steel GTAW F6 Filler would qualify for P1-P15F and F6 Filler.
For SMAW: Change the basemetal (for welder qualification) on a stainless procedure to Carbon Steel and weld with F5 (E309)....welder is qualified for P1-P15F and F5 Filler.

Thanks David 339933, I've got a lot to learn. As I've been a welder most of my career and have recently broken into qa/qc. I have a basic understanding of ASME IX or should I say can find some info but that's about it.

Try and get a copy of the CASTI Guidebook to ASME IX - will give you a bit more info.
