We will have to install some facades after a structural frame is constructed. The method is to hang the facade using chains and a lifting beam from the tower crane.

Now, I have seen this before and the crane hook and chains can come very close to the building and in some cases will touch it. This is not acceptable.

Some of my mate have said a "counterbalance" lifting system is available where the the hook can be ofset from the building and a device draws the facade towards it.

Well, I have searched and searched with no result. Do you tippers have any ideas or suggestions?

How about using a normal lifting system but keeping the chains and hooks away from the building and then using slings which could be controlled by hand at the level you are installing the facade to pull the facade into place. Carl Bauer

In the Ironworker trade, this counterbalance method is known as a "pump handle" and works very well. Just be sure you secure the counterweight to the load hook or ball with a sling so that when you slack off the load the weight doesn't drop down and hit your curtainwall or whatever you are lifting. Also you might consult some of your local contractors for alternate lifting methods (there are several that work well). You might also use nylon or wire rope for slings instead of chains. Whatever method you choose, there is no substitute for qualified Union Ironworkers and absolutely no excuse for damaging material on installation.

Thanks for the advice Carl, it is "low tech" enough for my men. I am also interested in the ""pump handle". Are there any pictures of it on the net. I am a little puzzeled by the counter weight because I'll be lifting 4-5 tons of facade anyway.

Please advise further.

Picture a beam with your load at one end and the counterweight at the other. Put the hook for the crane somewhere in between. the closer to the load the less the counterweight. In truth , this method would probably not be used with a load of 4 or 5 tons. Something of this size, I would use a "bull tail"(large dia. sling with eye and hook)to keep the main hook well above my load beam or spreader bar, then use slings (or if you insist, chains)to my load, sized suitably so that the men can maneuever the load into place by hand without damaging it or the existing bldg.(As Carl sugested).

Hope this helps, WORK SAFE
