Do you have clearance for welding a web stiffener in place (Using a T Section)... it's not a particularly strong connection.

The welds themselves shouldn't be any problem, I'm not sure what different opinions you could get on that?
Unless the beam is that old that the metallurgical quality is doubtful, but then we're talking 100-year old steel here.

Instead of a T, I'd use a U section, cope it, and weld the flanges of the U to the web of the I if you need the additional strength.
 
Thanks, king... the steel may not even be weldable... need some test coupons...
