Face Plate Welded to S-Beam 1

I'm getting different responses from Engineers and Installers on what type of weld should be used for a face plate welded to the flanges of an older I-Beam[URL unfurl="true"]https://res.cloudinary.com/engineering-com/image/upload/v1695904267/tips/Face_Plate_Connection_m8rs00.pdf[/url]. Would like to your collective thoughts?

Do you have clearance for welding a web stiffener in place (Using a T Section)... it's not a particularly strong connection.

Good question... Based on the sketch, a T-section could be installed. It didn't appear to me a top weld would be accessible.

Make the T section from inside of flange to inside of flange...

The welds themselves shouldn't be any problem, I'm not sure what different opinions you could get on that?
Unless the beam is that old that the metallurgical quality is doubtful, but then we're talking 100-year old steel here.

Instead of a T, I'd use a U section, cope it, and weld the flanges of the U to the web of the I if you need the additional strength.
