Factory Mutual Certification necessary??

Dear all,

As you know OSHA requires that some components of industrial plants to be certified by a NRTL (like Factory Mutual)in some services. It's my first project in US and I do not know if steel valves and pipes in fire fighting system must be certified in any sense or, on the contrary, certification only applies to certain materials like plastic pipes and fittings.

Afeter reading OSHA 29 CFR-1910 I do not find any difference among materials but some colleages say that only plastic valves and pipes must be approved and not if they are made of steel. Any experience in this matter?

Hi,

We did a FM and UL(Underwriters Lab.)testing on Ductile iron valves meant for the fire fighting systems for U.S.A

The testing was more stringent than the normal testing standard meant for the valves.(As I found out in comparision with MSS-SP67)

I am told that the insurance companies in U.S demands UL/FM testing for the fire-fighting systems.

If there are any other reasons I would be glad to know from our members.

The NFPA codes also require that certain components (e.g. deluge valves) are "listed", which means that they are approved by FM or UL. You will have to check the NFPA codes to see which components have to be listed devices.
