Our process tube used for the manufacture of carbon disulphide using methane and sulphur vapour has been subject to failure and often distorted after service. The tube is from HK20(20%Ni,25%Cr type) stainless steel and operating with a temperature range of 600 to 800C.What could be the possible reasons for this repeated failure and what do you suggest we do with respect to the suitability of the tube and operation of the plant.

Thank you.

I'll just ask the standard questions. Has failure analysis been done on the failed process tubes? Are there metallographic slides of the failed surface?

As mentioned above, send the failed tube to a metallurgical lab for proper failure analysis. Usually, tube failures in process plants are large dollar items because of downtime. Therefore, have a detailed failure analysis performed so that you can a long term strategy for the current material.

The failure analysis is important because even though there are only a few possible failure modes they do not have a common solution. In order to get the correct fix you need to know the exact problem.
