False positive from File | Open "Search" field

I used the "Search" field in the Excel File/Open dialog to search for workbooks containing the word "curvature". I got some hits and opened them all. I could find the presence of "curvature" in all files except one. I use the workbook search tool (making certain that all sheets are visible) and it cannot find "curvature" in any worksheet. Searched in VBA sheets and there was nothing there either.

What might be driving this false alarm?

The search function you are referring to appears to actually be the Windows Explorer search function, which only searches file names

Thanks for the reply. However, of the dozen file results returned only one had the target word in its filename and I could find the target in the worksheets. My observation is that Windows Explorer (Win 7) and the Excel 2016 Open dialog (which probably uses Explorer) also search file contents, etc.

I have Windows 7 Enterprise, and yes, it's supposed to search contents, but it sucks at it. I have TEXT files where it can't find things in their contents.

I've used dnGREP for some searches successfully, but it's got problems with binary files

I can't comment on the particular issue, or on earlier versions of Windows, but in my opinion the Windows Explorer search function, at least in Windows 8 and 10, is now excellent. As long as the folder and file type are set to be indexed it will do a full search on all text, and return results very quickly. You can also set up Windows Explorer to display a readable preview, which works for all office files and pdfs, and also displays very quickly.

That's probably my problem; I don't have my disks indexed.

I've always been concerned about speed issues on the disks, since I have about 3 million files between my two primary disks.
