family parts in the reuse library

Hello, I'm trying to create a library of metric i-beams to be used in the reuse library. I have the constraint sketch and created a family table and have applied all the sizes we commonly use. I have two questions. How do I add the length or extrude dimension to the input when the item is selected? When I add this to the family spreadsheet it doesn't allow we to edit the length on input. From searching the forums sounds like I need dash numbers but can't find an explanation on this.

Also is there a box to check to allow the reuse part added to be edited on its own. For example the one end of this beam needs a weld prep/miter cut applied but I don't want to effect the library parts or any other assemblies I've used the beam in.

To answer the first part of your question, you better create a deformable part where as the length of your i-beam is the variable, and place that part in the reuse library. A part family will only create statical parts which are only adaptable in the table itself.

Michaël.

What would I do about the other variables? height, width and wall thickness? There is no way of doing a combination of the deformable part and family part for the cross section?

I've got the i-beams added to the reuse library the profile is governed by a family table. the extrusion length is controlled by a deformable part reference. This works well but no features (chamfers or holes) can be added to this part as it is a deformable part. Is there a way of making this part modifiable and not linked to the reuse library?
