application involves making a 50 deg move in under 20 ms including settling time.
load on motor shaft is minimal ( under 1 oz)
it has to be a servo
please help in finding a suitable motor/drive
thanks

The DC motor will have faster start than AC since the AC motor losses some time due to sinusoid rise. The 20 ms is slightly more than 1 period of 60Hz power supply, 1/60=0.0166 seconds. Also, the angle of rotation 50 deg will take some time to implement.

what r your thoughts on an AC servo motor will the frequency issue hold true there
thanks

An AC servo could do this easily. You do not have to wait for the sinusoid rise time since the stator has a constant three-phase system with frequency zero at standstill. Moving 50 degrees just means turning the three-phase system 50 degrees and doing that in 20 ms is no problem. Go for an AC servo - everyone else does.

Hi Jag:
They make servo motors with ironless rotor specially
for high acceleration. I have seen a 3 inch dia. capstan
on a tape drive which was wrapt into a blob due to the high
acceleration -- the motor was undamaged.
