Attached is a drawing showing a metal ring to be fastened to an aluminium casting. I have put a pilot hole in the aluminium casting, but this does neet to be there. I need an efficient way of fastening the steel ring. Can a drive rivet be used in this situation?

Thanks

If you already have a pilot hole, why not just thread the two and screw them together? You can also use industrial adhesive or a drive rivet. It really comes down to the strength required.

Thanks Kyle,

On a previous design we have used Torx taptites, However for this design I would rather not have to deal with the bolt head & its size. The pilot hole shown is not part of the casting & can be omitted.
Could you expand or point me to info regarding the drive rivet pease?. Can this be used in a blind hole situation & will it be strong?

Many thanks

Clive

The drive rivet will have very low pullout strength and will resist only a nominal shear load. If it was my design, I would stick with the Taptite, it will give much higher performance.

A agree with Screwman (especially with his handle). If you need strength, especially in the pull-out direction, the taptite will work well.

If you're concerned with bolt size, you should do an analysis of how much pull and shear strength you actually need, with an acceptable factor of safety included as well. Then you can correctly size the smallest bolt possible (for your size constraints) while still having a viable design. It may be possible to counter-bore the bolt into the attachment to make the piece more presentable, if this is another concern.
