I have a model with approx 10.000.000 linear elements in Abaqus/Explicit on a powerful computer with the following specs:

AMD Threadripper 3970X 32 cores
256 GB RAM
nVidia RTX 3090, 24 GB VRAM

When I want to open the odb-file which is approx 260 GB in the Viewer it can take quite a while.
Is there any way to speed up the buffering of frames?

Taking a look at task manager while the odb is buffering, the process can take up to 60GB RAM, but the CPU and GPU is doing almost nothing. It looks to me like there is a lot of untapped processing power that could be used to speed up the buffering and plotting of results.

Besides lowering the graphics settings, can I do anything to make Abaqus/Viewer use more CPU and GPU power? I just want to view my results fast. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Best Regards

You can try extracting necessary data from odb so that you get new smaller database file. There is a special plug-in called "Abaqus ODB Extractor and Builder Tool" that can be utilized for this purpose. Or you could use Python scripting for postprocessing.

260 GB? That's insane. Even Crash simulation at automotive companies are much smaller. Are you requesting all kind of field variables for the whole model with a high output frequency? I doubt that it is even possible to handle all those information as a human. You should focus on what you are actually interested.
