Faulty keyboard/workstation LCD - any ideas?

Hi

I own a technics KN1400 keyboard/workstation which uses a large (for a workstation) LCD display for programming/navigating menus etc. To cut a long story short - back in 2002 the keyboard fell to the ground as the stand collapsed and caused some kind of damage to the LCD.

When you switch the machine on the LCD lights up blue but does not display any data/text - just remains on and blank. I wondered what the problem could be?

The rest of the machine appears to be ok - everything else still works apart from the LCD.

As said it switches on but nothing displays. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

Many LCDs make contact with the driving circuitry by means of a simple pressure contact through a rubber encased strip with conductors embedded in it. After a good drop, things can become misaligned opening most or all of the circuits.

If you've nothing to lose anyway, you can disassemble the LCD installation, identify the rubber strip (often black), and then reassemble it all very carefully making sure that everything is lined up properly.

The blue backlighting is behind the LCD and is almost certainly an entirely different circuit (not part of the data path).

The odds are probably a bit less than 50/50 that this would fix it. Worth a try if you've got nothing to lose.

Well technics no longer make workstations anymore, so I would imagine that parts are very hard to come by. I will try this method as I feel it might be an expensive job to fix - and as said I have nothing to lose since it's not being used at the mo anyway.

If the worst comes to the worst - I can always buy the same kind of LCD module and fit another module?

Most such LCDs are custom; you'd be lucky to find it. And the fault could be on the other side, the circuit not the display itself.

Haha! thats okay!

You are very correct actually, I just hope I can get it fixed. It is a decent machine and would be a shame to see it go to waste any longer.

If you open it up, give it a thorough visual inspection for anything broken, loose, cracks in circuit boards, etc.

I'll upload some for you tomorow night. Actually technics made the 'best' workstations (IMO) - the 1400 takes advantage of the D5V mk11 processor, so for a home based workstation it's very good indeed.
