I am designing a frame for a 15-ton hydraulic ram to remove bearings from a shaft. I went this route so the operator could load the parts easily. Attached is a .jpg of the frame. The ram (not shown) will have a front flange mounted on top of the top plate. There will be a clearance hole (not shown) for the cylinder to pass through to the shaft. My question is: to accurately model the stress and deflection of the frame under maximum load conditions (30,000 lbf.), would I apply a force of 30,000 lbf. to the bottom plate and an equal but opposite force to the top plate, or would it be 15,000 lbf. in both directions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
