I'm trying to model feedscrews using Inventor 2008. I've extruded a 1" diameter rod 2 feet. I need a 90 degree v groove with a 1.5" pitch the length of the rod. I've tried using the coil feature with the profile I need but since a coil twists the profile it does not represent what is cut with a cutting tool. I need the full profile to be visible when looking perpendicular to the axis of the rod. The only other option I came up with was using a sweep with a coil made in the 3d sketch mode. I was thinking a guide face might keep the profile from twisting like it did when I coiled it but everything I chose for a face either created an error when modeling or didn't help. Has anyone had experience with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Attach your file here.
I would use surface coil rather than 3D Sketch Helix.

rollupswx,

I tried everything I could think of using the surface coil. The attached part has the profile I need coiled around the rod. You can see that when looking perpendicular to the axis of the rod, you don't see the full profile cut.

I would start by reading these documents
first thing I noticed is that your Sketch1 circle was placed at the origin - but not constrained to the origin. This should be automatic.
Then I noticed that your Sketch2 is not constrained and that you are using a lot of uneeded dimensions rather than geometry constraints. (see attached)
I have never had much luck helping someone till they mastered the basics of sketching.

Thanks for the links. I'll get up to speed.
