Just wanted to ask about to experience in Using Grundfos NKG pumps in sea water desalination as a feed pump knowing that we already used Grundfos NK pumps as CIP pumps and right now we want to make sure that both NK and NKG pumps can be used as feed pumps in water desalination plants.

Grundfos makes outstanding pumps in the international industrial market, but some makes and models might not be available anymore.

In re: to duplicating make and model of pumps to lessen replacement part inventory, I would say the functionality of the pump spec outweighs the reduction of inventory. Similar pumps for an RO Filtration Plant uses a litany of smaller pumps, such as,:
RO Source Water Tank Source pumps,
RO Feed water pumps,
Closed Circuit Desalinization (CCD) pumps,
Plugged Flow Desalinization Pumps (PFD),
RO/Clean In-Place (CIP) Pumps,
CCD CIP/Flush Pumps,
Chemical Dosing Pumps (4-10 different varieties)
and a litany of others.

Generally, the specification for each pump is dependent upon its application, placement, and location in the Desalinization train/process and sizing.
Even if you were to duplicate all the existing conditions for pump design and specification, the RO or CCD Skid manufacturer, might void any warranty of their equipment performance unless their pump spec meets compliance to their design.

We had a similar situation recently where a Dosing Pump, which had used the manufacturer's recommended chemicals, had problems with the pumps. After rebuilding them twice and replacing with new, it turned out the chemical supplier failed to verify their QC of their chemicals they provided, and the chemical viscosity had become thicker by a factor of 4 for the past 6 months. Pump strokes required more power, less dosing was provided,, and chemicals had to be diluted to meet viscosity, then re-dosed to meet chemistry requirements at the Skid.

Long story short, keep all your supporting systems compliant with the RO/CCD/ et skid manufacturer. Same applies to the filters and cartridges used in the system. Recommend keeping same make and model of pump as originally designed, and if anything re-verify calcs to ensure the facility housing the skid systems have the same physical parameters as the Std system was designed to support. e.g elev and flow rates of pumps, verifying TDH as designed and in use.

In the above effort, it might assist in finding some pumps which might be cannibalized or substituted for short periods, until the proper pump is replaced or repaired.

Mate, pumps are generally used to transfer water from one place to another. If you have to desalinate, you'd probably need an industrial filter to do so instead.

You could try Waterco's desalination system, which is from Australia. They've listed themselves in the Australian Stock Exchange by the way, and they've done a major project in making a Water Desalinsation Plant in Iraq before.

The NKG pumps are just ordinary transfer pumps. If you procure these pumps with the correct materials of construction, then you shouldn't have any issues.
