Hi,

I had a list of materials sent to me today with the question are the materials ferromagnetic or not?
- ASTM A193 B7M,
- 18-8 st steel,
- BS 1449 HR4,
- ASTM A216 WCB,
What I have found out so far is that 18-8 stainless (ally 304) is austenitic and not ferromagnetic. ASTM A193 B/M is listed in the standard under ferritic material, and hence should be ferromagnetic. As far as I can find BS 1449 HR4 and ASTM A216 WBC are both ferromagnetic. Can anyone please confirm if my findings are correct or give input to the correct answer.
Thank you

Depending on composition and cold work 304SS can be fairly magnetic, or not.
Most of the lower alloy 300 and 200 alloys are meta-stable and will contain some amount of residual delta ferrite and well as forming strain induced martensite.
You are correct, the others are all fully ferromagnetic.
