We just hired a new person in our office to help us for field work. I am looking for a field investigation handbook or similar so this guy can use it at the field. He does not have a geotechnical background so something not too technical is preferred. I already have the "Geotechnical Investigations Methods - A Field Guide for Geotechnical Engineers" by Roy Hunt...

Books may be fine,but nothing like someone alongside you while you are getting started. I'd think twice before sending someone out there without a lot of time alongside someone doing the same thing. Your reputation will be on line A bad name out there is tough to live down. Mistakes can be made out there. the job may not justify two people, but the cost is well worth it. In my past experience dumb decisions by inspectors have really hurt.

make them read D2488 so they actually understand that laboratory and field descriptions are not the same (i.e., there is no field description for silty clay).

Teach them that there is a body of data called, "Fugitive Information" - information that if you don't document it, you'll never get back. Consider the following:

drilling rate
drilling action
zones of water loss (these are usually recorded)
zones of water return (these are rarely recorded)

I could go on, but the observant field hand records this stuff. They have to be taught; however.

p.s., FHWA just updated their GEC-5. It's a major document that includes all sorts of geotechnical topics including field exploration, etc.
