I am attempting to understand the wind loading in the new ASCE 7. At the bottom of Figure 27.3-7 on page 262, in the caption, there is a condition in parentheses (0.25 less than or equal to h/L less than or equal to 1). I design screen towers for the aggregate industry a lot which look similar to buildings, are open, and generally have diamond plate flooring. I believe it is appropriate to classify this as an open building, thus I need to apply the appropriate vertical wind force on the floor plate (acting as a roof). However, what should I do when the h/L value exceeds 1.0? I am struggling and cannot seem to figure out if these coefficients apply under this condition. I may be on the wrong track. These structures could, possibly, be considered truss towers which, if my understanding is correct, means that I shouldn't apply vertical force to the deck plate as it is not part of that procedure. If anyone has any insight they could offer, I would appreciate it.
