Does anyone know the difference between the "*.sldprt" and "*.SLDPRT" file extensions?

At some point you just have to shoot the engineer and build the dang thing.

There is no difference. File names including file extensions are not case sensitive.

Besides the stated obvious, [pipe], "*.sldprt" is not a file extension but ".sldprt" is. The "*" (asterisk) is a wild card that can be used for example to find all files that end in ".sldprt".

I ask because I've noticed some of my SW files have uppercase file extensions and others have lowercase file extensions. I thought it might have to do with the version of SW the part was created in.
