I run Autocad r12 in DOS. As autocad is starting up a message appears saying "unable to lock file d:\acad\support\acad.mnx", how can this be corrected?

Autodesk does not support r12 anylonger. As a minimum you should be using r13. Most are on r14. Why are you using r12?

The file you are trying to open still has a lock file (*.mnl) associated with it,
probably due to a system crash. Search for the file name with the *.mnl extension. Delete the "filename.mnl" only. You should now be able to open
the file from the R12 main menu. As MarkRPflow mentioned Autodesk does not support R12 anylonger. Almost everyone is using R14 R2000 or some version of AcadLT. I would strongly suggest moving to one of the currently supported revisions. The responses to this post should tell you not many people still know the quirks about older releases.

The file you need to delete is acad.mnk not acad.mnl. Don't delete acad.mnl because it is used to load the acad menu utilities. All locked files in Autocad 12 have a *.??k file extension. File locking was an annoying and ineffectual feature in v12 and has been removed from newer releases.
