The company that I am currently doing contract work for is moving into NX6.
They want to have a suffix at the end of the file names:

123456_dwg.prt this is common in NX, no problems
123456_part.prt this is what they want for a model file
123456_asm.prt this is what they want for an assembly file

Is there a way to truncate the "_part" and "_asm" from the file names so that they will not show up in the attribute <W@$SH_MASTER_PART_NAME>

I really don't think there is a way to do it, but I thought I'd give it a try and ask it anyways.

Is SH_MASTER_PART_NAME a NX defined attribute or a company defined one? I am guessing it is a NX defined one, in which case there is no way to truncate it and use it directly.

Can you take an attribute and define it as being a subset of another attribute without using a custom program or macro? I haven't seen this, but it would be helpful if possible.

I was thinking the same as you as far as what you stated in your second paragraph ... if it is possible I should be able to figure it out.

thanks
