File Names and descriptions

We have a problem, and it's driving us nuts.

I have two seats that are both running SW 2010.

My operating system is older, Windows XP

Another operator has Windows 7 with SW 2010

When I file a part, I get a file name and a description. When a drawing is made from this part, the file name goes into the "Drawing number" box, and the description goes into the "Title" box. This is the way we want it.

When the guy running Windows 7 files a part, his only options are a file name. No description option.

When he makes a drawing, the file name goes into the :Title" box.

If I open his drawing, and change the file name, I end up with anopther file in the directory. If I give it a description, then I open the drawing, and I get the new description pasted right over the file name that he used to file the drawing.

Any ideas on how we can get his computer to give us the option of a file name AND a description, just like mine does?

His solid works is a bit different than mine, we don't understand why.

It sounds to me like you are using the drawing template that is setup the way you want and your partner is using a different one. Make sure you at least have the same templates. Better yet, point both SWX setups to the same network locations with your customized templates.

That makes no sense. When you save a solidworks part file there is a blue text string right under the file name and save as bar. You click on that and enter the description that appears in the property table and shows up in windows explorer. You can also type it in to the part property before you save the file.
I'm running SW11, W7-64.
Your issue could be with the drawing format, not the OS.

We he saves a solidworks part file, there is not a blue text string under the file name and save as bar.

No, he can't.
He can add a description column in the bill of materials on the drawing, and then it's all as should be. But that's not convenient because he has to look it all up first.

Something missing here, there is something we need to configure, but we just can't find it.

Why does my save screen have a description box, but his does not.

Attached is a PowerPoint showing the Custom Properties in our Part, Drawing, and Assembly file templates. We have these in a templates directory on the network and everyone's SWX installation defaults to this directory and these templates. Our drawing template uses all of these fields from the part and assembly file to automatically populate the titleblock. It works great!

We used the Copy Settings Wizard to easily set everyone's installations to be the same and life was good. Prior to that we had the head scratching where we had issues similar to your original post. Making all the installations point to the same network locations for all the various things eliminated ALL of these issues. Our issues now are due to differing skill levels and residual ACAD approaches to modeling.

We already use that. Our problem is in the simple "save as" on the first save of any part on his computer. There isn't a box for the descrption. He can fill in the sheet you just power pointed, but thats not a solution. He can even ad the description in a bill of materials on a drawing, but thats not a solution either.

When you save a part for the first time, there is a box for the file name. Below that is a line for the type of file to save, then below that, there is a box for the description. This last box he does not have.

First of all, Windows 7 SW2011 has the option to add a description and I would expect 2010 to be the same. It is below the filename text box and must be clicked to open a text box for description entry.


This is easy to troubleshoot. Of course I am assuming you are both getting your drawing templates and sheet formats from the SAME network location. Look at the sheet format and determine what parameter is being used for Drawing Number and Title. They should be filename and description respectively.

Can you be more specific? What is the name of the "other file"? Have you watched this other user go through a test case entering filename for a test part and then creating a drawing for it? When you say the new description is pasted over the filename are you saying that you can see both? If so that is a title block problem.
