Our IT department would like to replace our SoldWorks file server with a new computer but in doing so they want to give it a new name. The problem I assume I'll be faced with, once the new server is installed, is having to redirect every single part and assembly path to the new server upon retrieval. Long ago I was advised not to use mapped drives to avoid problems that could be avoided by always using a path name rooted to the server (I'm now not certain this was good advice). I am not using PDM so I thought there might be a simple program that I could use to scan part and assembly files and replace the old server name with the new server name. I'd appreciate any advice someone might have on this situation. Thanks!

A couple years ago our IT dept did the same. We did not have PDM also and it created havoc for us. We ended with re-installing SolidWorks. We have been running PDMWorks the since then and last week we were again moved to a new server. Everything worked out great. I just have to change the file locations pointer for templates...a 2 minute process (each PC).

mlaro,

I believe that if you go to "Tools, Options, System Options, File Locations" you can add the new directory name to the list for each of the different types of files that SW uses. I think you would want to move the new diretory to the top of the list for each file type. You would have to do this for each computer but it should work just fine.
