Fillet Weld - Stress and Size Calculation 1

I know there are guidelines in ASME codes for fillet weld sizes, such as guidelines for fillet weld size when welding a pipe into a socket. However, does anyone know if there are formulas associated with calculating the stress experienced in a fillet weld of a given size for this or a similar application? I have always been curious how these fillet size recommendations have been developed. Would a simple shear calculation using the weld leg and circumference be valid?

Very simple approach, treat the fillet weld as a line and evaluate tensile and shear loads on the line. Once you apply knock-down factors for welds in shear and tension, you can size the weld based on throat and fillet leg.

desertfox,

Many thanks for the great site, which links to other great sites.
