We just purchased our home 1 year ago. We were assured by the builder & r/e broker that we were in no danger of getting water in our basement. Non working cranberry bog about 2-300 yards in back of us. Last summer through fall there was a lot of activity in the bogs (front end loaders, tractors, etc.) and there are large mounds of dirt in those locations furthest from our property line. A few weeks ago we noticed a lot of water buildup in the bogs where there wasn't any last year. The owner recently did a controlled burn and the grass in this area is all burned. Is it possible that filling in of the bogs furthest away from our property, as well as the controlled burn had anything to do with water coming into our basement this weekend through cracks in the floor as well as through the hole where the sump pump goes??? We did not have a sump pump in place, but my husband is putting one in today. Soonest advice will be so very much appreciated. Thanks, Pattyann

If I could ask a few Questions:
1 Is the ex bog uphill or downhill from your house?
2 What type of soil is on the surface of your yard?
3 was the "burn" on the vegetation around the bog or a burn of peat from the bottom of the bog

Thanks

The truth will set you free. Best of luck. Geodude

In the past how was the bog kept wet? Was it stream fed or runoff or water table...or a combination of all the above? Did the house have indicators (stains, etc.,) of previous water seepage? Did the earthwork block a drainage channel or change the natural flow of a watercourse or basin?

You may need to check into these further.
