is there an easy way to set filters or "configurations" of an assembly....
For example, lets say last week i was working on a large assembly specifically working in a small area in a couple of sub-assemblies,(only showing those components)
Then, this week I'm working on the same large assembly, but working in a totally different area, on totally different sub-assemblies...
Then someone comes along and wants to know something about last weeks work so i'd then pick on the filter to show that area, show them what they want, then click another filter to go back to what i was doing before they asked the question.
I found a thread which spoke about "groups" but when i tried it it said i need an advanced assemblies licence

Have you looked at 'Bookmarks'?

Once you get to a point where you think you might wish to come back to later, go to...

File -> Save Bookmark...

...and assign it a unique name. And when you're at some other point where he might wish to return to, save another Bookmark using a different name. Now any time you wish to return to one of these 'points' just go to...

File -> Open...

...set the 'Files of Type' to 'Bookmark Files and PLM XML(*.plmxml)' and select the desired 'Bookmark' file.
