This forum is a great place to learn about SW. A big part of learning is knowing what questions to ask. In these threads, topics & features are discussed which may not be covered by a persons usage of SW in their particular field.
However, in the majority (albeit a small majority) of cases, the answer to many of the questions asked in these threads can be found either in the SW Help files or by querying the Keyword Search at the top of this page.

It is obvious that some members are either unaware of, or too lazy to use, the Help & Search features. If a question piques my interest, the first thing I do is search those features & as it turns out, most of my replies to other members posts have been gleaned from there.

So, to the "unaware" members, please take note & try the Help & Search files. While searching for what you really want, you will be suprised at what you accidentally find & hopefully remember for future reference.

And to the "lazy" ones .... [machinegun] [flush2] [cannon] [hammer]

Sorry if this comes across as being self-righteous but I had to get on my [soapbox] & get it of my chest.

I understand what your saying CorBlimeyLimey. Sometimes I feel the same way.

One thing you forgot to mention though is the FAQ section. That section is added for everyones benefit. Some of the questions that have been asked over and over needs to be made into an FAQ. Then the poster asking the same question again should be pointed there.

very good CorBlimeyLimey.
I especially like your bottom line! [thumbsup2]

Perhaps it's another manifestation of the old "80-20" rule, such as I have observed among CAD usership: 80% of CAD users are adept at only 20% of the program's functionality.

Likewise, I would wager that a large percentage of forum users are not adept or even aware of some of the functions this great site provides.

I highly recommend that newbies take a leisurely walking tour of all this site has: different fora, TGML & emoticons, notifications, FAQ's, and search capabilities.

I've noticed that there are differences in search results depending on where one starts a search. Results are better is starting from the forum's keyword search page, and not the search panel at the top of the page. The search panel at the top of the page seems to yield more general results, i.e. which forum to go to.

Took my own advice and just discovered the drop-down list next to the search entry box at the top of the page!

Thanks for the comments gents.

I doubt very much that this thread tip will do any good whatsoever ... but ya gotta try [smile]
At least I feel better now [thumbsup2]

One more thing to add about FAQs... [red]anyone[/red] can write one. So feel free to add your thoughts to help other members of Eng-Tips.

I forgot to include the following in the original post:-

Also for over 50 demos of SW modules, features, etc, go to & if you have hi-speed internet you can start viewing. If not you can order the CD. The demos are not tutorials, but do show valuable "how-to" info.

One thread that newcomers [glasses] often start is "SolidWorks vs ... "
This would be a great help if someone would gather all "vs" threads to FAQ [thumbsup2]

The problem with the 'vs" threads is that the capabilities of CAD advance about every 6 months. It would be hard to keep such a dynamic FAQ current... even though SW usually comes out on top.

Threads come up with new information which is good. Because when looking at comparison threads of different CADs then evolution of one should be considered as strong point in choosing "the best".
Maybe thread links in FAQ can be preceded by date of starting thread? Sure some threads can go on for years but still, this would be good place to look.

Timely post, CorBlimey, kinda what I was gently aluding to in my reply to the most recent post on RAM-graphics problems.

Yup, trouble is its timely all the time. Like I said it probably wont make the slightest difference ... in fact the subsequent posts prove it hasn't. Ah well, it made me feel better ... at least it didnt get "Red Flagged". Oops .. did I say that out loud? [bigsmile]
