FPL is fire rated wire for Fire Alarm systems. FPLR is fire rated cable that is known as RISER wire that is capable of holding it's own weight when for example it is dropped down a building wire chase. FPLP is fire rated wire that is PLENUM, this simply means that when it burns it will not put off any or very little toxic fumes. In a plenum ceiling you should use this type of wire. Normally this wire comes in Red but it is also available in white. Many people get the FPLR wire mixed up, thinking it is Fire Plenum Red wire which is not correct.
When striping wire, contractors will often turn their tool all the way around the cable and pull off a couple of inches and then hook up the devices or appliances and later find faults on the system and wonder why. When a contractor first strips wire he or she should then pull the string and pull another inch or two back exposing the inner cables and then clip off the first inch or two that could have had score marks from the tool that could have caused a fault. Not many Engineers inspect wire terminations but these types of unprofessional practices can cause problems later on the projects. Engineers that inspect for supervised power supplies etc... are feared but greatly respected.
