The fire radio traffic indicated that the fire originated in a construction trailer that was set up in the adjacent parking garage. This was called as a working fire and a full first alarm response by the first in unit...it was less than 10 minuted before it was upgraded to a 2nd alarm. This was a very fast moving fire that required some of the workers to be rescued by firefighters. At last two "maydays" were called indicating that even fire fighters were having difficulty getting to a place of safety after they had entered the structure for rescue and/or suppression operations.

Unfortunately one construction worker died and a second is not accounted for.

Over that past few years there have been a fairly large number of these types of fires, but the majority of them have not occurred with construction workers on site.

I used to live in this neighborhood. It's a pretty congested little area and I was surprised there was even room to build something like this. Looking at the aerial view, it seems that firefighters would have very little access or staging areas to fight a fire here.
