Can somebody recommend type of fixed system of fire protection for an alcohol processing and storage tanks.

hi,
did you look at the NFPA?

regards

The question is pretty broad. If you look at NFPA 30 it's not going to give you an answer because for operations, it requires that an analysis of the process be performed before the designer and AHJ decide the minimum requirements.

Questions I have are:

-- Batch or continious?
-- How is the ethanol produced?
-- What is the number and diameter of the storage tanks?
-- What is the standard for construction of the tanks?
-- Is the plant located in an area served by a Fire Department or is it in the boonies?
-- Does the plant have its own fire brigade and if so, what are their capabilities and limitations?
-- Do you have a water supply and what is its available fire flow?

Good luck.

thanks stookeyfpe,

I guess you are right. My question was so broad. I need a broad answer only, like: Do I use foam system? water sprinklers? should the foam applied to the tank internals?

There is no way your question can be answered based on the input you give. Type of fire protection depends on many things like:
- amount of flammables present
- layout of the plant (especially separation distances)
- risk profile
- requirements from local authorities
- operating company preferences
- how long will it take for firemen to take action
- etc. etc.

If you want know more about the subject I can recommend you to get a copy of API RP 2001 "Fire Protection in Refineries". The principles described in this RP are also useful for plants other than refineries.
