I thought there was recent discussion on this.

Have not inspected a new fire pump in awhile.

FPE involved in plan review and installer to test it

Just wondering

Non seismic

Non high rise or similar

Can the fire pump be mounted directly to the floor?

Latest NFPA 20 edition in use .

Well you would need to pull the plans and make sure it has a foundation and meets 2013 Ed of 20

6.4.4* The foundation shall be sufficiently substantial to form a permanent and rigid support for the base plate.

Also 7.4 and 8.8 are relevant depending on type of pump.

Thinking about it I can not recall seeing a fire pump mounted directly on the floor. Of the 1000’s of fire pumps I have reviewed all have been on a 12-18” high foundation off the floor. Not saying this is wrong but definitely unusual.

Depends. If they are pre-packaged units they are shipped on a steel frame and anchored to the foundation.

It is not unusual to have a foundation where the pump skid sits on, usually but not necessarily made of concrete. This is necessary to elevate the pump as much as needed to align with the rest of the piping system, say a main header that is required to be elevated (for example necessary space for adapters steel to CDI/PE to connect to outside private main etc). It would be otherwise bothersome to do with just elbows especially for large capacity pumps which require large pipes. Not talking about pre-packaged here. Also vertical turbine shaft pumps may require a higher foundation due to alignment with the shaft of the motor.

Thank you all for the confirmation

It is a set up like Stookey mentioned

The submittal should demonstrate compliance with NFPA 20 Section 4.29. It has some specific risers, including a requirement for a flexible pipe coupling when the fire pump discharge is part of the system riser.

I will look at that section

Thanks for the help
