Hello,

An issue has arisen with the proposed setup of a vertical turbine fire pump serving a building fire sprinkler system. It was proposed to have the vertical turbine pump in a pump house. The pump was to draw off an underground tank located about 20 feet from the pump house building footprint. The tank is 12 foot diameter, and the bottom of the tank would be about 15 feet or so below grade. There would be a large underground pipe that would connect the tank and the vertical turbine pump inlet (which is about 10 feet below grade).

Is this setup allowed by the NFPA? The tank could be setup with a level sensor such that the tank water level would never drop below say 5 feet below grade, thus imparting a minimum vertical head of 5 feet on the pump inlet/bell. There is a pump rep who is saying that is not allowed by the NFPA, but I'm not sure he knows what he is talking about.

Please let me know your thoughts if anyone has dealt with this before. Thank you
