Dear Members,
Please advise whether it is possible to do fire safe test as per API 607 for Butterfly valve Double offset, Double Flanged 12' 150# RF Body-A216 WCB, Disc-WCB+EPDM, Seat:Stellite #6, Stem: SS 316; Operator-Gear. The supplier says Butterfly valves with EPDM seats don't require a fire-safe test certificate. Is that true.?. But the end user is asking for fire safe certificate for butterfly valves. Pls advise

Hello,
your question: The supplier says Butterfly valves with EPDM seats don't require a fire-safe test certificate. Is that true.?
Short answer: This is not entirely correct.

Longer explanation:
Fire test standards which covers elastomeric materials are: ISO 10497, BS 6755-2, API 607 or API 6FA
Since you are referring to API 607, so lets approach it from API standards.
Assuming the butterfly valve is following standard API 609, then within this standard quote
5.1.2. Fire-tested valves
If he purchases specifies fir tested valves, the valve's design shall have been type tested and certified to meet all performance requirements of API 607. Fire test report shall be made available to purchaser upon request.
Unquote

A snip from API 607 'The test pressure during the burn is set at 0.2 MPA for nonmetallic seated valves rated class 150 and 300 to better simulate the conditions that would be expected in a process plant when a fire is detected and pumps are shut down.

So yes, it is possible and often mandatory request from end user to have the butterfly valves fire-safe tested.

Water treatment plant and/or butterfly valve manufacturer specializing on water might not common to have this requirement. If debate continues between you and manufacturer, suggest to find other supplier. They should not charge you extra for fire test certification.

D
