Does anyone know of a current NFPA/IBC requirement to provide separate sprinkler and/or fire alarm systems on each side of a firewall (when the IBC requires both systems)?

I have an I-1, Type V-A structure that will have multiple firewalls because of IBC area limitations. I've had some AHJs require separate systems (lead-in, risers, FACU, FDC) for each area...so that no part of the overall structure/building is unprotected during a fire event in any of the other areas. I've also had AHJs allow pipe and cable to pass through the firewalls to serve areas on both sides of the firewalls. So I'm looking for code language in either direction.

Unless I am mistaken, I don't believe the IBC dictates separate systems and I know that NFPA does not. The IBC directs you to which type of system is required dependent on occupancy, size and construction type. That is it. Penetrations through fire walls would just require proper materials and assemblies to achieve the fire rating of the wall.

I would have a discussion with the AHJ about the issue and see what they require in their jurisdiction.

The question cannot be answered unless you provide the occupancy classification(s).

It's an I-1 with Type V-A, maybe that didn't cone across well in my original post.

Using the 2012 IBC and to your question, one can penetrate a fire wall provided the penetrations comply with Section 706.9. The IBC allows openings in fire walls so I'm not sure why penetrations would be prohibited.

As to the building classification as a Group I-1, a fire alarm system is not required by the IBC when the building is protected by a NFPA 13 automatic sprinkler system.
