Fitnees for Service Assessment

I am required to do a fitness for service assessment on some chlorine lines and assossiated equipment. I have never done one before or even seen one. Any one give me some pointers on what I need to be putting in it and what the HSE will be expecting?

Here is some advice;

1. Use Google and search for information on the process and equipment.

2. Verify your materials of construction and bill of materials.

3. Hire a professional engineering company that does fitness for service. You will be dollars ahead and attempting to so this with no prior background will put you in a bad position.

Don't even need an engineering company. Hire an API-510 [vessels] and -570 [piping] Inspector with chlorine experience. This certified Inspector will give you a signed report that you "can take to the bank".

Not all that many engineers are familiar with chloride stress corrosion cracking, whereas ALL API Inspectors are. It is one of the damage mechanisms that is in the "Body of Knowledge" that their certification testing covers.

Yes- He said chlorine not chloride. Whether that's chlorine gas or perchlorate in solution(swimming pools) or both is unclear.

The Lines are for liquid chlorine from a 1 tonne drum through a vapouriser and then chlorine gas supply. Think we have got everything we need in place but just need some direction on how to present it to the HSE.

In addition to the excellent advice posted above to hire a firm with expertise in API 510 and 570 inspections, you should get the guidelines available for the Chlorine Institute.
