Hello. I have a supplier that intends to flame cut plates for rolled and welded cylinders for a NACE application. Would the ends and the longitudinal bevel of these cylinders need grinding to remove the heat affected zone? Does anyone know how NACE cylinders are generally manufactured?

Thanks,

I'm not sure what exactly a "NACE cylinder" is, or which NACE standard you refer to, but I'll give it a try. MR0175 requires NACE compliant material to be in an approved heat treat condition, as well as meeting all other requirements in the document. Approved HT conditions are: Hot-rolled (carbon steels only), annealed, normalized, normalized + tempered, normalized + austenitized + quenched + tempered, or austenitized + quenched + tempered.

I would not classify "as flame-cut" as one of these conditions from a microstructure standpoint. So yes, for this standard removal of the HAZ would be required. In fact, I'd recommend removal of the HAZ for any sour service (not knowing any more than you've stated).

Thanks, OGMetEngr. I'm pretty new to the petroleum piping industry and I haven't actually been able to lay eyes yet on NACE MR0175 or MR0103. The cylinders I am referring to would be branches off of, or sleeves on, a pipeline. I know NACE has hardness requirements, so I got worried when I heard flame-cut edges.
