Hello Everyone,
We currently have a flameproof acquisition system operating in a hazardous area (zone 2, offshore). I need to interface the current flameproof system with an external Intrinsically Safe HART network of cabling and sensors. I can't modify the current system in any way.
My idea is to come out of the current flameproof junction box with a short cable and a connector. A second flameproof box would then connect to that cable. The second box would contain the IS barriers (not enough room in the current box). From that box, I can install my IS system.
I am looking for a connector for 4 HART loops that can be connected and disconnected while energized. This connector will be installed in the flameproof portion of the system (non-IS).

Any advice? Thanks for you time.
Chris.

Cludwig,

I've worked with StoneL devices in the past for ASI, Profibus and Fieldbus disconnects in hazardous locations. They may have something for HART. This was in the USA where we have Class and Divisions (Not Zones), so I am unsure if StoneL has devices for Zones.

They have devices where individual instruments can be disconnected from the main trunk line without affecting anything else on the trunk.

Thanks Controlnovice...

I guess I wasn't too clear on the certification. Offshore installations are divided into 3 zones, clean, zone 1 and zone 2. Zone 2 requires IS, purged, or explosionproof... Zones are more of an industry definition of hazard than a level of certification.

For the certification, I need CE EExd. Most international manufactures build their equipment to meet both US and European standards. After that, it is just a question of asking them to attach the right sticker.

I'll look into StoneL.

Hi cludwig,

I can't offer any help with your problem, but I'm interested that offshore 'zones' appear to be quite different to the onshore 'zones', although the terminology is very similar. Thanks for the insight.
