Hi,

I have a question about the method used to obtain the flange stress using the autopipe vessel design. ASME appendix II reviews:

St = Y.M/t².B

But observing the autopipe results, the equation used is this:

St = (6*M*CF)/[(3.14*C-n.d)*t²]

Can anyone tell me what are the autopipe references for this equation?

Check the definition of the variables in each case, see if they are not making unit conversions or diameter/circumference conversions in the formula, or just substituting variables in there instead of defining another variable.

I found references on the calculation page, referencing the following:

Slip-on loose flange (BS / PD 5500 3.8.4).

I believe that BD / PD 5500 is:

PD 5500 "Specification for unfired, fusion welded pressure vessels" also known as British Standard known as BS 5500.

Can anyone tell me about the difference in considerations? Is it feasible to make this kind of approach?

joserobertokf, the most often used approach to pressure vessel design is to identify which of the many available Codes is required, and then design to that one only. It would be very unusual to be able to pick and choose among them.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
