Would somebody please tell me what kind of gaskets are required for flanges on fire water protection systems.

Tipe of flanges: carbon steel, cast iron, flat face and raised face ASME/ANSI class 125/150 flanges. Diam: 2 1/2"-8"
Pressure up to 150 psi.
Water: river or tap water.

Are there gaskets FM approved or UL listed for fire protection?.

Can somebody mention specific manufacturers or materials for such gaskets.

Dave:

NFPA 24 has no requirements for listed gaskets for private fire protection water mains. Section 6.1 requires that the valves be listed and I would assume that the gaskets that are supplied with the valve are evaluated as part of testing laboratory.

I can research this in greater detail in the morning and see what I can findout.

Interesting question. The industry standard product is called an generic "red rubber" gasket (1/8" thickness). But, I have never actually seen a data sheet for it.

I will have to contract one of the sprinkler distributers and ask them what brand they stock.

I also did a quick search of NFPA 13 and found the following reference "AWWA C111, Rubber Gasket Joints for Ductile Iron Pressure Pipe and Fittings, 2000." But that only applied to underground piping.

If you are in an oil and gas facility then use a spiral wound gasket (like Flexitallic Type CG) because of the commonality of spare gaskets. The spiral wound gasket is superior to the rubber gasket mentioned above but it does cost more.

I received a response from UL. So long as the gasket meets AWWA or ASTM standards they are acceptable. UL will hopefully provide me with the ASTM standard number and name.
