Flange local buckling 1

This may be an odd question but I never ran into this before, or if I did, I don't remember how I dealt with it. Flange or web local buckling are based on the geometry of the element. How do we remedy that other than using a different section? Apologies for the somewhat frivolous question. I feel bad asking it.

To expand on Tom's answer - you'd want longitudinal stiffeners which would significantly reduce your b/t ratio. Transverse stiffeners are typically not considered to increase your local buckling resistance (they'd have to be really closely spaced to have any effect).

Other than in large built-up girders, adding a longitudinal stiffener is probably not economical in hot-rolled steel, compared to going with a slightly bigger section. You see it quite frequently in cold-formed steel sections and aluminum extrusions, however.
