The American Standards Association was the successor of the previous organization known as the American Engineering Standards Committee. One might suggest that the ASA was the predecesor of The American National Standards Institute.
However, unkike the ASME, etc. ANSI does not develop standards.

The current standard for flanges is ASME B16.5-2003 issued by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. B16.47 covers flanges larger than 24 NPS.

The forward pages of ASME B16.5 gives an extensive and exhaustive history since the beginning of the standard including all of the name changes and organizations involved.
